Hi, I’m Erica. Welcome!

Bachelor of Music (Honours) - Victorian College of the Arts

I love teaching music, especially working with singer-songwriters and creative musicians. My lessons are personalised and practical, from beginner basics through to songwriting and creative development.

Since 2014, I’ve taught students of all ages and skill levels, in voice, guitar, ukulele and double bass — often combining instruments. I also specialise in music theory, songwriting and improvisation.

If you’d like to explore lessons, I offer a free consultation.

You can also get a feel for my teaching approach through my Practice Space podcast.

Frequently asked questions

I teach face-to-face lessons in Melbourne, Australia, and online lessons to students in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the UK, the US, Asia/Pacific and beyond.

Lessons run at times that work across many time zones (see time availability below). If you’re unsure about scheduling based on your location, you’re welcome to book a free consultation to find a time that suits you.

Below are answers to some of the most common questions about lessons. If there's anything else you’re wondering about, feel free to get in touch.

Who do you teach?

  • Absolutely! Many of my students began as adult beginners with little or no music training. Some now write their own songs, perform in bands or choirs, or simply enjoy playing for themselves.

  • Yes. Many of my students are self-taught, and lessons are often about filling gaps, refining habits, and moving past creative blocks.

I work with you where you’re at, helping you build structure and confidence while keeping your own musical voice and approach.

  • I regularly work with advanced and professional musicians who want to expand their creative practice.

Lessons often focus on things like improvisation, harmony and music theory, songwriting, adding an additional instrument or singing to their skillset, or developing personal projects alongside technical work.

  • Not at all. Many of my students learn by ear or play from chord charts and tablature.

If it aligns with your goals, we can introduce reading skills organically into your lessons, which can expand your musical possibilities.

  • Yes. You don’t need to already play an instrument to begin songwriting.

We can build simple guitar, ukulele, keyboard, or computer-based skills into your lessons, so you have practical tools to support your ideas as they develop.

What do you teach?

  • Yes. I teach guitar and ukulele specifically for singer-songwriters.

Lessons focus on supporting your voice and songs, including accompaniment, harmony, rhythm, arranging, and developing confidence singing while playing.

  • Yes. I teach singing for instrumentalists.

Lessons might focus on lead singing, harmony singing, coordinating singing and playing, and using your voice confidently in songwriting and original projects.

  • Definitely. Many of my students are learning singing alongside guitar, ukulele or double bass. You’re welcome to start with one and add others over time.

  • Absolutely! My theory lessons are tailored to singers, self-taught musicians, and songwriters who’ve learned mostly by ear.

I teach in a way that is enjoyable, accessible, and relevant, builds your confidence as a musician, and supports your creative work.

  • Yes. My focus is contemporary and improvised music, including jazz.

I work with intermediate to advanced students from a range of backgrounds, including classical musicians, self-taught players, vocalists and singer-songwriters.

    • Ongoing lessons are the best place to start if you’re a beginner.
They’re also a good fit for intermediate musicians who want accountability, continuity, and steady progress over time.

    • Masterclasses are one-off, focused sessions for intermediate to advanced musicians.
They work well if you’re looking for help with something specific, such as technique, songwriting, creative blocks, or performance preparation.

If you’re not sure which is right for you, you’re very welcome to book a free 30-minute consultation and we can discuss it together.

  • I am based in Melbourne, Australia and teach in-person lessons in Vermont and Bentleigh. I also offer occasional workshops when I am travelling, so if you’d like to hear about those, you’re welcome to join my mailing list.

  • Yes. I teach online music lessons for singing, guitar, ukulele, double bass, songwriting, and music theory.

Students from Australia and overseas are welcome, and I have times in my schedule that suit most timezones.

  • Definitely. Many of my students are learning singing alongside guitar, ukulele or double bass. You’re welcome to start with one and add others over time.

  • This depends on your goals, background, and availability.

If you’re a beginner or lower-intermediate student, I usually recommend committing to several months of weekly lessons to build a solid foundation. Ongoing lessons are booked in blocks of 10, which is typically enough time to build momentum and see whether continuing feels like a good fit.

More advanced musicians may benefit from a smaller number of focused sessions, and in some cases a one-off masterclass can be a better option.
