In Our Own Words: Leonard Cohen

7pm, Friday Dec 22, Paris Cat Jazz Club

with special guest Louise Goh

“I’m just knocked out when anybody does a cover of mine … I think there are songs that are better done than I have done them.” ~ Leonard Cohen, February 18 1997

The music of Leonard Cohen is vast and universal. Not bound by genre, time or place his songs lend themselves to endless reinterpretation and re-imagination. With a poet’s hand he paints words that dig deep, question, soften and smother, and his music is as sophisticated as it is simple. His songs have been recorded by some of the world’s greatest musicians including Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Johnny Cash, Rufus Wainwright, Madeleine Peyroux and Tori Amos.

Award winning musicians Erica Bramham, Nathan Liow, Adam Spiegl and Justin Olsson bring their own stories and influences to their arrangements of Cohen’s music, making this a show not to be missed for both long time fans and newcomers to Cohen's repertoire.

Featuring special guest Louise Goh on piano.

Friday December 22
Paris Cat Jazz Club, 6 Goldie Place, Melbourne
Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm show time

In Our Own Words: Tom Waits (premiere)

7pm, Friday Feb 2, Paris Cat Jazz Club

"I’ve learned how to be different musical characters without feeling like I’m eclipsing myself. On the contrary, you discover a whole family living inside you."
— Tom Waits

There are characters that strut, slink and stumble through Tom Waits’s songs, from barrooms to ballrooms, through back alleys and along desolate piers.  They lean on lamp posts, beckon from dark corners, row through rivers of misery and starve in the bellies of whales.  These noir figures venture through the blues, jazz, vaudeville and spoken word, strong-arming bangs, squawks and cries out of unconventional instruments on their way through.

This visceral world is where award-winning musicians Erica Bramham, Nathan Liow, Adam Spiegl and Justin Olsson find themselves, presenting new interpretations of Tom Waits’s iconic music in an intimate jazz club setting.  Following the sold-out success of their Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell shows, this is a not-to-be-missed debut that will capture the imagination of both devoted fans and newcomers to Wait’s music.
