I haven't written any music since my final piece for #thesongchainproject, way back in August 2017. So long ago! What have I been doing with myself this past year and a half? I finally oiled my rusty brain this weekend with a little bit of research for some new projects, and so far it feels good. I forgot how one tiny seed of an idea can lead you in all sorts of interesting directions, and there are definitely a couple of little sparks that I'd like to explore further. I'm trying to keep the burner set to low, letting the ideas bubble away while I continue to practice bass, otherwise I'm liable to get carried away.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the cycle of creative work, and have shared some thoughts in my first piece of writing for the year, link in bio. I've narrowed my own cycle down to three phases, Practice, Creation and Promotion. I'm curious if anyone else finds their work follows similar or differing cycles, and how you go switching between the different mindsets.

One of this year's challenges, playing bass in a community orchestra. I went along to my first rehearsal last night, and managed a couple of notes during the read through. My bass clef reading is atrocious, my brain defaults to treble clef and I find myself Good Birds Don't Fly Away-ing in rests, but there's nothing like a bit of pressure to get it under control...

I kinda crashed after my album launch in May last year, and never even downloaded the pictures from my camera that @nathanliowpiano kindly took. I found them today, including this really wacky one.

I wish I knew how to carry my energy through projects, rather than burn out completely and require six months of hibernation before I'm ready to get back on the treadmill. Perhaps setting lower expectations would help, but of course that's easier said than done. Does anyone else experience the post-project crash, and do you have strategies for pushing through? Pushing gently of course.

It's been a while since I took a self portrait, and at 36°C it's too hot to do much else.

Sitting with some low, calm energy today before the school term of teaching begins again tomorrow.
Last night's dusk.
In some kind of New Year euphoria, and with the school holiday lull in teaching income, Adam and I agreed to a month of no takeaway. So far so good, but we will be tested over the next few days because our ancient fridge has died. It then miraculously revived itself after we'd gone out to order a new one to be delivered on Tuesday. It must have heard us plotting its demise and made a last ditch effort to hold onto life.

The timing is not great, as I've recently discovered the $15 fill-a-box deal that happens on Sundays at the Prahran Market and have all this produce to store in the fridge that is now clinging to the edge and could fall at any moment.

The line for the veggies at the market gives me a nice feeling of being on holidays, waiting among all the cheerfully hungover backpackers. I'm reminded of ten years ago being resourceful in Eastern European hostel kitchens, baking cakes in frying pans to try and cure the light homesickness of travelling alone in winter. I have very itchy feet for travel these days, so I'm hoping to reward my frugality with a trip out of Australia this year. Pipe dreams...
