SCP #103: Spider (II)

The second in my series of spider-themed improvisations.  I have been working on a series of performance pieces for this opera, which is debuting on Thursday, so most of my music and lyrical creative energy over the past week has gone into that project.  I have been indulging my cinematographic creativity as part of this project instead.

SCP #61: Salt and Grease

I live in Melbourne's southern suburbs, and for those unfamiliar with our city there is a strange North vs South divide that sees people hating on residents on the other side of the river to themselves.  I have lived on both sides, and while I was a North-sider I spent a lot of time thinking the South was inferior. But then I moved across town and realised that I much preferred the South, and I barely think about the North at all, except when I have to travel over there to play a gig (which I'm doing tomorrow).  Because while I prefer to live South of the river Melbourne's live music scene is concentrated in the North.

SCP #57: Hummingbird

When I started this project back in January I was still sailing along on the time-rich bliss of summer school holidays.  I had a great routine of waking up, practicing mandolin or guitar with coffee, doing some exercise while listening to a podcast, showering, practicing some more before and after lunch, then working on my daily song in the evening.  But then the school term and private teaching started up again and my routine got thrown into turbulence and I haven't been able to steady it since.

SCP #49: The Café And The Fly

This piece marks the end of week seven.  At some point I stopped actively counting the days as they click past, so realising I've been at this for seven weeks is a bit of a shock.  By the end of next week I'll have finished my third month, and one whole season of songs.  These daily videos are not just a record of my creative output, but also a record of a year in my life going by, which is quite nice.  We are coming to the end of Melbourne summer, so as the days become shorter and cooler I am sure my songs will adapt to the new season just as much as my wardrobe will.  Despite fluctuations in energy and enthusiasm for the project my body and mind show no signs of quitting, so I really hope I can make through all four seasons of songs.

SCP #41: Cocoon

Friday's deadline failure has made me realise that 2am bed times for the rest of the year are just not sustainable, especially when I am teaching at 8:30 or 9am the following day.  I have generally been good at actually writing and recording the day's song before midnight (or at worst before 1am), but I don't feel my task is complete until I edit the video, upload it, write the day's blog post and then share it across my social media platforms.

SCP #40: Moth

I could fib, and tell you that I recorded this yesterday and just didn't have time to upload it, but that's not really in the spirit of this project.  So no, I didn't record this yesterday. I didn't even finish writing it yesterday.  I had the guitar part and half the lyrics done, and then I fell asleep, exhausted, on the couch with a pencil in my hand while trying to work on the second half of the words.  I gave in, and went to bed, I woke this morning refreshed but very annoyed that I hadn't just recorded what I had, instead of labouring over it when my mind had clearly switched off for the day.

SCP #17: Briar Rose

I dived a little way back in to my secret past with today's piece.  My music degree was my fourth attempt at tertiary study, and the only degree I managed to complete.  When I was much younger I studied almost all of a textile design diploma, but gave it up because it was destroying my love of making things.  I'm not sure why studying music didn't do the same, perhaps just because I was older and more sure of my path.

SCP #5: Swing-Song

I have a young guitar student who is incredibly cute, and likes to take off his shoes before he starts his lesson.  He says he's "just not comfortable" until he does.  He always informs me while removing his footwear that he has tan-bark in his socks, and he inspired some of the lyrics for this piece
